Firefighters tackle blaze at 12-story Walnut Square building in Center City

A fire was reported Wednesday night at a 12-story apartment building in Center City . No injuries were reported at the Walnut Square building on the southeast corner of 13th and Walnut Streets.

No injuries were reported after a fire erupted at a 12-story apartment building in Center City Wednesday evening.

Firefighters were called at 7:19 p.m. to the Walnut Square building on the southeast corner of 13th and Walnut Streets. They had the blaze under control at 8:21.

Brittany Rouchou, 27, was taking a nap in her fifth-floor apartment after a long pediatrics residency shift when she heard the fire alarm sound about 7:15.

There had been false alarms in the building since she moved in a year ago, but this time other residents announced that this time it was real.

"I smell smoke," some residents declared as they rushed down a stairwell, Rouchou said.

Once she was outside of the building, she could see smoke billowing from the roof and recorded several videos of the scene with her phone.

Authorities told her the fire was on the second floor and the smoke made its way up through a narrow space in the middle of the building.

Rouchou saw no one hurt.

"There were no ambulances, thank God," she said.

As fire crews mopped up in the aftermath, patrons at popular restaurants along 13th Street continued to dine al fresco.

Several blocks around the intersection were closed to traffic.
