Video released showing hammer attack on man

Police yesterday released a video showing a man wanted in last week's attack on a rider on the Broad Street subway with a clawed hammer.

Detective Kenneth Roach said the attack happened about 12:15 a.m. Thursday on a northbound train. The victim, a 20-year-old Germantown resident, was napping when the assailant pulled the hammer from a backpack and began beating him. Roach said the attack continued for five minutes on the platform after the train stopped at the Fairmount station. The assailant then fled up the stairs with a 3- to 5-year-old boy in tow.

The victim, whose name was withheld by police, had just finished a shift at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He got back on the subway and rode to Temple University Hospital, where he received stitches in his scalp and neck. He called police from home.

The attack was captured on a SEPTA surveillance camera. Anyone with information is being asked to call Central Detectives at 215-686-3093.
