Shark Watch: Great white Mary Lee off the Jersey Shore

Tracking data shows the 3,500-pound great white shark Mary Lee is back in familiar waters.

Mary Lee, the 3,500-pound great white shark known to frequent the waters off the Jersey Shore, is back.

OCEARCH, the nonprofit research organization that tagged Mary Lee in 2012, regularly posts updates on her whereabouts. Here's the latest on her travels:

Friday, June 2: Mary Lee is still cruising up the New Jersey coast. Her last ping, at 6:29 a.m., located her off the coast of Point Plesant and headed north. She traveled about 64 miles in the last 24 hours.

OCEARCH named Mary Lee "Shark of the Month" for May.

The much smaller Cisco was last pinged on May 27 at 3:43 a.m. off the coast Rehoboth Beach and headed out to sea.

Friday, May 26: After a few days underwater, Mary Lee surfaced at 7:35 p.m. Thursday  long enough for her location to be recorded. She traveled about 65 miles in the last 72 hours and was still headed north. She was last reported off the coast of Ocean City, Md.

Beachgoers in Lewes, Del., and Cape May, N.J., might want to keep an eye on the track of Cisco, an 8-foot-7, 362-pound immature great white shark who is hanging out at the mouth of the Delaware Bay.

Tuesday, May 23: At 7:16 a.m., Mary Lee was located off the coast of Virginia, west of Chincoteague Island. She has traveled about 40 miles in the last 24 hours and was still headed north.

Monday: Mary Lee was pinged at 7:45 a.m. Monday near Hog Island, Va., about 120 miles south of Ocean City, N.J.

The group has tracked her travel over the last month from the coast of Virginia northward. According to OCEARCH data, Mary Lee has traversed nearly 70 miles in that time.

Mary Lee, who has her own Twitter account, was originally tagged off Cape Cod and has since has traveled more than 34,000 miles up and down the East Coast and as far away as Bermuda, according to the OCEARCH site.
