More risqué, adults-only Battleship New Jersey tour debuts tonight

A new tour of the Battleship New Jersey debuts tonight.

And this one will give participants a view that's a little more risqué than the typical battleship visit.

Officials say the adults-only "Twilight Tour" will let visitors to tje decorated ship see some of the more explicit sailor art that's not shown on normal tours, and hear stories about battleship life that aren't told to all-ages audiences.

The ship housed thousands of sailors during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Lebanese civil war. Under those conditions, "you are going to get some interesting art work and stories that you just can't share with everyone touring the battleship," curator Jason Hall said in a statement.

"So we are offering adults the chance to experience the ship in a bit more explicit way than our daytime tours," Hall said.

The 90-minute tours begin tonight at 6 p.m.

The battleship's Twitter account says tour-goers can expect stories about a Playboy Bunny, crew beauty pageant and "other hidden tidbits." Hall told NJ.com that stories told on the tour may include accounts of the ship's anchor killing the commanding officer of a U.S. destroyer and a woman "working her way" from California to Hawaii on board the ship.

"It's a reminder that this isn't just a steel box -- people lived here, for years, and these are their stories," he said.

The tour costs $34.95, and includes a drink.

The Battleship New Jersey was built in Philadelphia and launched in December 1942. The ship was decommissioned in February 1991 and has been a museum and memorial on the Camden waterfront since October 2001.
