Man twice arrested at Camden concerts charged with sex assault in Montana

Police once sought to ban Darren Walp from Camden in 2013 for shouting racial slurs at two separate country music concerts.

Police once sought to ban Darren Walp from Camden in 2013 for allegedly shouting racial slurs at two separate country music concerts.

After an incident in Montana this past weekend, it's unlikely Walp will be visiting any town in New Jersey soon.

Montana police say it was the same Darren Walp, of Ridley Park, Pa., who staged an armed stand-off that followed an attempt by sheriff's officers to arrest him in a rape case.

Walp, 34, surrendered Sunday morning in Hamilton, Mont., after holding police at bay for 20 hours, according to local police.

Walp first achieved notoriety while tailgating at a Toby Keith concert at the Susquehanna Bank Center. After allegedly "shouting very unsavory, unacceptable things at people" and scaling a fence to wave a Confederate flag, Walp was arrested and charged with bias intimidation.

Two months later, he was arrested in Camden for a second time. Police said Walp had stopped his red pickup at the intersection of Broadway and Morgan Street on Aug. 11 to grab a beer stored in a cooler on the bed of his truck. Without provocation, Walp allegedly screamed racial slurs and challenged the driver of the vehicle, an African American, to get out of his car. The driver sped away, flagged down a police officer and provided a description of the man and the red pickup. Walp was arrested soon after and charged again with bias intimidation, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Following the second incident, Camden Co. Police Chief Scott Thomson had harsh words for Walp.

"We never want to see this individual in the city of Camden again," said Thomson.  "Therefore, I will ask the Susquehanna Bank Center to permanently ban this individual from their venue."

Walp, who was arraigned today in the sex assault, was being held on $500,000 bail.
