Baby giraffe born at Cape May zoo

Visitors to the Cape May County Park and Zoo will soon see a new baby giraffe.

The female calf was born Sept. 2 and will make her formal debut to the public on Wednesday, the zoo said in a statement.

In the meantime, she is being introduced to outdoor areas, her herdmates and getting limited time in the public viewing area.

The calf, whose name hasn't been announced, is the first giraffe born at the zoo in 12 years. She joins the herd of three female giraffes and one male giraffe already at the Cape May zoo.

She's the first calf for 7-year-old Joanie. Her father is 17-year-old Sterling. Both giraffes have been at the zoo since 2011.

The giraffe weighed about 150 pounds at birth and is about 6 feet tall.
