A single-engine plane crashed Thursday afternoon off the coast of Atlantic City, authorities said.

The Mooney M20 aircraft crashed about 2:45 p.m. It was traveling from Gaylord, Mich., to Atlantic City International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Flightaware.com, a flight-tracking service, shows that a Mooney M20 registered to Michael J. Moir, 68, took off from Gaylord at noon and was scheduled to arrive in Atlantic City at 2:51.

A call to Moir's residence was answered by a Michigan state trooper who said that Moir's wife, Jean, was unavailable to speak and that no information would be released pending notifications.

The Coast Guard said that debris was found seven miles off the coast and that a lifeboat, helicopter, and patrol boat were dispatched.

"They haven't found anyone yet," David Micallef, a Coast Guard spokesman, said about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. "Just debris."

The FAA did not have immediate information on the number of people inside the plane, or on whether anyone had survived.
