Man charged with illegal dumping in N.J. state park

SHAMONG TWP. A 31-year-old Trenton has been charged with illegally disposing solid waste in Wharton State Park, the state Department of Environmental Protection said Wednesday.Selvin Lima is accused of dumping roofing shingles, wood pallets, cardboard and plastic along a dirt road off Route 206 in Shamong Township in Burlington County. The dump site was two miles south of Atsion Recreation Area.

Participants in the 12th annual Pine Barrens 4-Wheel Drive Cleanup found the debris in two piles on Oct. 27, and the group hauled the materials away. Authorities identified Lima as a suspect through a document found in the debris, officials said.

Lima was charged Nov. 22. He faces a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted of the second-degree crime. Lima was released after posting 10 percent of $10,000 cash bail pending a court hearing in December. - Darran Simon
