Robbers picked wrong store

AUTHORITIES SAY no charges are expected in the shooting deaths of two men killed after what police say was an attempt to rob a convenience store in Reading.

Reading officers responded to Latino's Meat Market about 11 p.m. Saturday and reported finding one man dead at the scene. The other was taken to Reading Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

After reviewing security video and talking to witnesses, investigators said three masked men apparently entered with plans to rob the store, where two employees and at least one customer were inside. One of the men had a pistol that he fired inside, and police said another man could be seen pointing a stun gun at one of the employees.

At some point during the robbery, police said, the two employees pulled weapons of their own and fired several shots at the masked men, hitting two of them. The third man grabbed an unknown amount of cash from the register before fleeing.

The two men killed haven't been identified. No one else was seriously injured, police said. One employee had a cut on his nose but it didn't require immediate treatment, they said.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams, who went to the scene, said the case will most likely be one of self-defense and the shootings justified, but the investigation continues and a final decision will be made later.
