Crash kills three

exchange students

Three Japanese college students were killed and five were injured when a car carrying them veered off a freeway and struck a power pole, officials said Friday.

The students were trapped in the 2000 Honda Prelude after the crash late Thursday in Oceanside, Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The male driver and two passengers - one male, one female - were killed. Two women and three men were hospitalized. All were freshmen in the international program at Palomar College, and were staying with host families, school officials said. - AP

Jeffords laid to rest

Sen. Jim Jeffords left his mark during his years in Washington, but family and friends said he never let his position eclipse his love for family and the simple things in life. John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman, 59, was denied release from prison in his eighth time before a parole board, New York corrections officials said Friday. He was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. - AP
