Officials: Girl, 3, was

killed before shootout

A man who engaged in a shootout with police in Temple Hills, Md., with his 3-year-old daughter beside him, appears to have stabbed and shot the girl before he was killed by officers, Prince George's County officials said Sunday.

Police said the man was Frederick Roy Miller, 38. Court records identify his daughter, who was in the car her father drove while firing at police, as Laila Miller.

The chase began Saturday after Miller allegedly shot Laila's maternal grandfather and great-grandmother at a home in Fort Washington, Md. Both were in critical condition Sunday.

Police initially said they were not sure whether officers knew the girl was in the car when they fired at it, nor whether she was killed by a bullet fired by her father or by an officer returning Miller's fire during the chase.

Police said the initial shooting may have stemmed from a custody fight. - Washington Post

The tallest lighthouse in New England will likely soon have a new owner. The federal government on Sunday closed out an auction for Boon Island Light Station, with the top bidder offering $78,000 for the historic lighthouse built in 1855 on a tiny rocky island six miles off Maine's coast. Government officials now have 30 days to evaluate the top bid and close the deal, said Patrick Sclafani, spokesman for the U.S. General Services Administration. The winning bidder will be identified at that time. - AP
