Ex-editor says Diana gave him a royal phone book

Britain's late Princess Diana gave a phone book containing royal contact details to the former royal editor of the News of the World tabloid, a London court heard on Thursday.

Clive Goodman, who is accused of two counts of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, said the princess had given him the book in 1992, and that she was looking for an "ally" in order to "take on" her estranged husband, Prince Charles.

"She was going through a very, very difficult time," Goodman told the court. "She told me she wanted me to see the scale of her husband's staff and household, compared with others.

"She felt she was being swamped by people close to his household. She was looking for an ally to take him on - to show there were forces that would rage against him." He had not paid for the books, which were sent to his London office, he said.

Goodman is on trial over allegations relating to the hacking of phones belonging to celebrities, politicians and crime victims by News of the World.

Election result is disputed

Salvadoran electoral authorities on Thursday declared leftist Vice President Salvador Sanchez Ceren the winner of a bitterly contested presidential election, but the political right refused to accept the loss. Tension continued to run high in the small Central American country four days after a runoff vote favored Sanchez Ceren, a former guerrilla commander, by the tiniest of margins, according to a final count by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
