A 53-year-old South Jersey man was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Camden to five years in prison for stealing money from women through a telephone dating scam.

Prosecutors said Patrick Giblin, formerly of Ventnor, had been sent to prison in 2007 for a similar scheme and in 2015 for violating the terms of his supervised release. Giblin was not allowed to leave New Jersey but he nevertheless traveled to Albany County, N.Y., to scam women he had contacted through telephone dating services, prosecutors said.

He would convince women in other states that he wanted a romantic relationship and needed money to relocate to be near them, prosecutors said.

Giblin pleaded guilty in February to one count of interstate travel and use of a facility in interstate and foreign commerce with the intent to launder money.
