Albert M. Reeves, 88, of Riverton, chief of the Riverton Fire Company from May 1972 to January 1975, died of pancreatic cancer Friday, Feb. 5, at home.

Mr. Reeves joined the fire company when he was 20 and was still listed on its website membership list.

The most memorable event during his years in the company, son Gordon Reeves said, was a Christmas morning fire at a Cinnaminson home in which children died.

Though the decade in which it happened and the specifics of the fire are lost to memory, Gordon Reeves said, his father's company was the first of several units to arrive at the scene and the first to enter the building.

"It really disturbed him" for some time afterward, his son said.

For that and other dangerous assignments, Gordon Reeves said, "I really take my hat off to those guys."

Born in Riverton, Mr. Reeves graduated from Palmyra High School and was an Army military police officer, part of the time in Germany, during World War II, his son said.

After the war, he worked for H.B. Williams Service Center in Palmyra.

From the 1950s to the 1990s, Mr. Reeves was a lineman for what is now Public Service Electric & Gas, and retired as a chief lineman for its office in Moorestown.

He was a member of the Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association and the New Jersey Relief Association.

Besides his son, Mr. Reeves is survived by daughter Sandra Morison. His wife, Helen, died in 1980, and their son Anthony died in 2013.

Visitations were set from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, both at Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad St., Riverton, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there, followed by burial in Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson.

Donations may be sent to the Riverton Fire Company, Fifth and Howard Streets, Riverton, N.J. 08077.

Condolences may be offered to the family at www.weberfuneralhomeinc.com.
