An off-duty Philadelphia Housing Authority police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect Sunday night in Germantown, police said.

The officer was walking west in the 400 block of West School House Lane about 6:50 p.m. when he was confronted by two men, one of whom had a gun, Philadelphia police said.

The officer opened fire and bullets struck the armed man several times. The suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m.

The suspect's gun was recovered at the scene, police said. The second suspect, who has not been identified, fled in an unknown direction.

The officer, whose name was not released, was not injured.

The shooting will be investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit. Police on Monday did not release further information.

A PHA spokeswoman confirmed that the shooting involved a male officer who was off duty, but had no other details.
