Panel to discuss women's pay inequity

MOUNT LAUREL Bridging the pay gap for women will be among the topics at a panel discussion sponsored by the Southern Burlington County NAACP on March 29.

The civil rights group is sponsoring the free event in recognition and observance of what it calls "Women's Her-story Month."

The SOULcial Justice Cafe Series event will address "Women in the Workplace: Balancing, Leaning and Making a Seat at the Table." 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Mount Laurel Library, 100 Walt Whitman Ave.

A panel of women representing represent the law, labor, and military fields will share their experiences and insights about gender and diversity in the workplace.

"Making sure women have the same opportunities to succeed is one of the biggest issues facing our country, as both a moral and economical issue," the NAACP said in a news release.

Women represent nearly half of the workforce and are the main breadwinners in four out of 10 families, according to the Institute on Women's Policy Research. Women earn more college and graduate degrees but still earn considerably less than men.

In 2013, female workers made only 78 cents for every dollar men earned, institute statistics show. That is the case in virtually every occupation, the institute said.

According to the institute, at the current pace of change, it will until 2058 for women to achieve pay parity.
