Haverford High School program to benefit from eating contest

HAVERFORD Haverford High School's ninth annual Wing Bowl is scheduled to take place Friday at 1 p.m. in the auditorium and pits five students against five staff.

The event, which raises about $1,000 annually, benefits Haverford's Best Buddies program, which builds social and employment connections for people with intellectual disabilities.

Staff members have won in six of the last eight years. Substitute teacher Brian Kolins took the title last year after eating a total of 41 wings in two rounds.

Among this year's contenders is high school history teacher Leon Smith, "the Wing King," who won in 2007, 2009, and 2013.

Competitors qualify by raising the most money in decorated buckets at lunchtime. This year students raised $238, and staff raised $278.16.

The wing-off has three rounds - students gorge for 10 minutes, and then it's the staff's turn. The final three-minute round pits the top student and staff eaters.

The winner gets a trophy and $100. - Kathy Boccella
