Franconia residents to discuss deficit

FRANCONIA TWP. In the wake of a massive budget deficit, 19 percent tax hike, and staff layoffs, Franconia Township residents have organized a citizens advocacy group.

The first meeting of Friends of Franconia Township is planned for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the township building, 671 Allentown Rd.

According to the group's Facebook page, the meeting will include a public forum, a review of residents' options for opposing recent budget cuts, and meeting potential candidates to run for office.

Two of the five commissioner seats are up for election this year.

In December, township officials announced that years of inaccurate budgets left no choice but to raise taxes and lay off six police officers and four other staffers.

Many residents, including the leaders of the friends group, opposed the law enforcement cuts, which are still being contested before the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board.
