UPPER HANOVER TWP. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Monday completed work on new bridges on Route 29 (Gravel Pike) over Hosensack and Perkiomen Creeks.

"The new bridges will provide motorists with 75 to 100 years of service, and will be safer for bicyclists and pedestrians with the addition of wider travel lanes and shoulders," Lester C. Toaso, PennDot district executive, said in a statement.

Workers over the last 17 months removed the former structures; replaced the bridge over Hosensack Creek with a single-span structure; and replaced the bridge over Perkiomen Creek with a new concrete culvert. Crews also constructed two- to eight-foot shoulders, depending on the width of the roadway, and installed new guide rails.

The two bridges are located within a half-mile of each other and carry about 10,000 vehicles a day, PennDot said.

The $2,535,584 project was financed with 100 percent state funds. - Inquirer staff
