Free flu shot clinic is set for Thursday

WEST CHESTER Chester County will give out free flu shots Thursday both to protect residents from getting sick and to practice distributing large quantities of medication should health officials need to do so during a public health emergency.

Chester County's flu shot clinic is part of a region-wide exercise to practice dispensing medication. The county is part of an 11-county organization called the Public Health Workgroup of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The group includes counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.

Chester County will give 1,000 flu shots, said county spokeswoman Rebecca Brain.

The free walk-in flu shot clinic is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Handi-Crafters, 215 Barley Sheaf Rd., Thorndale. Participants will get the shot and information about emergency preparedness plans and activities.

Spanish and sign language interpreters will be on site. The county also will be able to translate other languages.

The county's Health Department also offers flu shots by appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays for a fee. The shots are free for uninsured and underinsured families. - Michaelle Bond
