Praise for retiring nonprofit director

WEST CHESTER Chester County commissioners at their meeting last week praised the retiring executive director of a nonprofit in Coatesville that fixes houses for county residents.

"It's been a wonderful journey for 26 years," said Jim Ford, who founded Good Works.

Robert Beggs, a volunteer leader, became the nonprofit's executive director this month.

Good Works' mission is "to extend the love of Jesus Christ to low-income homeowners by making their homes warmer, safer, and drier." Within the next five years, it will have repaired the houses of more than 1,000 families throughout the county.

Commissioners issued a citation recognizing Ford as "a Chester County citizen whose determination, desire, and faith has impacted the lives of thousands of his fellow citizens - be they homeowners who have benefited from home-improvement projects or volunteers who have experienced the many benefits that come with giving back to their community." The county has given the nonprofit more than $2 million.

"It really is an honor to follow in Jim's footsteps," Beggs said. "Maybe more than an honor. It's going to be a challenge."
