A PHILADELPHIA police officer was locked up yesterday for allegedly assaulting his wife.

Joseph Griffin, 30, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault, terroristic threats, intimidation of a witness, harassment and recklessly endangering another person, police said.

According to the District Attorney's Office, the assault unfolded on June 4 inside the couple's home in Northeast Philadelphia.

Griffin, an eight-year veteran of the force, worked in South Philadelphia's 3rd District. He's been suspended from the force for 30 days with the intent to dismiss.

When asked why it took three months for Griffin to be charged, D.A. spokeswoman Tasha Jamerson said police union rules call for separate investigations to be conducted when a cop is accused of a crime.

The D.A.'s Office can investigate an allegation against an officer only after Internal Affairs has conducted its own probe, she said.

On Wednesday, the Daily News reported that 164 Philly cops have been the subject of domestic-assault allegations during the last three years, but only 11 have faced criminal charges. Just three of those charged have been successfully prosecuted.
