A Bensalem Township police officer this week was named the American Legion's national law enforcement officer of the year.

BENSALEM A Bensalem Township police officer this week was named the American Legion's national law enforcement officer of the year.

Sgt. Andrew Aninsman, of the department's special victim's unit, was presented with the honor at the organization's annual conference Wednesday.

The award seeks to recognize a law enforcement officer for professional competence and community involvement, according to the American Legion's website.

In addition to his role with the special victims unit, Aninsman was previously the department's primary media spokesman and helped coordinate various community outreach efforts.

Aninsman said in an interview Thursday that he was humbled to earn the distinction, and that in his acceptance speech he dedicated the honor to police officers nationwide who have died in the line of duty.

"I'm a small speck in this whole thing," he said. - Chris Palmer
