Barbara Lane Crowell, 52, architect

Barbara Lane Crowell, 52, a former Upper Dublin resident, died Thursday, July 3, in a bicycle accident near her home in Auburn, Calif.

Police said Mrs. Crowell was struck from behind by a pickup truck at 6:40 a.m. as she rode her bike along Foresthill Road in Placer County. She was pronounced dead by paramedics at the accident scene.

California Highway Patrol officers identified the pickup's driver as David Correa, 37, of Foresthill. Correa, who stopped and called 911, was arrested by police. He was being held on charges of DUI felony and related offenses.

Ms. Crowell's friends and relatives said her death at mid-life was keenly felt.

"She was just vivacious, loving, fun, and very bright. We will miss her terribly," her sister Kathleen M. Miller said.

"We were devastated," said Larry Matz, president of the Sierra Foothills Cycling Club. "It's a real shock to our entire cycling community. Barbara was a friend, a member of our club, and an avid cyclist."

More than 100 friends and relatives gathered Wednesday, July 9, at Meadow Vista Park in Placer County to remember Ms. Crowell, who had lived in California for 27 years. Members of the cycling club wore yellow jerseys as a sign of solidarity with her family.

She had ridden with them often and had gone on endurance rides in the California mountains and also triathlons.

"She was always on the go," said her father, Richard L. Crowell.

Ms. Crowell graduated with the Class of 1980 from Upper Dublin High School and earned degrees in architecture from Syracuse University and the University of California at Berkeley. She was an architect for three years with Ewing Cole Cherry Parsky in Center City before leaving for California in 1987.

Her most recent job was at Jordan Knighton Architects in Auburn. She had designed houses, educational buildings, and an addition for a Methodist Church.

"She touched many people on her journey and lived life to the fullest," Crowell said.

Ms. Crowell was married to Robert Putnam. They later got divorced.

Surviving besides her former husband, her father, and her sister are a son, Jared Putnam; a daughter, Adele Putnam; her life partner, Dave Liberti; her mother, Arlene P. Crowell; a brother; and another sister.
