Girls' group awards grant

WEST CHESTER As they continue to hear about school shootings and peers dealing with eating disorders and self-harm, a group of high school girls in a county grant program chose emotional health support as its main priority in awarding a total of $25,000 to eight agencies that serve Chester County.

Over the last decade, the Girls Advisory Board, a program of the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls, has granted almost $200,000 to agencies trying to improve life for girls and young women in the county. The advisory board, a group of 20 high school girls from across the county, chose programs that improve girls' emotional health through support for depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem, and other issues.

"They picked programs that spoke to them," said Susan Mostek, executive director of the fund. "It's really very exciting for teen girls to be empowered to help their community."

Minding Your Mind, a nonprofit that aims to remove the stigma associated with mental health problems, received $2,000. A full list of grantees is on the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls website, www.ccwomenandgirls.org.
