Sides to meet on 'Redskins' ban

LANGHORNE A meeting between the Neshaminy High School principal and students on the newspaper editorial board is scheduled to take place Thursday, according to principal Rob McGee.

The point of the meeting is to discuss the board's recent ban on the word Redskins. The meeting, requested by McGee, was originally scheduled for Tuesday.

McGee came under fire after recently asking the students to lift the ban on the word. "Redskins" is the long-held name of the school's sports teams. He said that the board's decision could end up censoring students who wanted to be published in the monthly paper, the Playwickian.

The editors, who voted against using the word because they said it was racist, said they were standing firm on the ban.

The intent of the meeting, McGee said, is to share perspectives and try to find common ground.

Last week, the spat made national waves when ESPN anchor Keith Olbermann awarded a distinction he calls "The World's Worst Person in Sports" to McGee and Board President Ritchie Webb, who also supported lifting the ban.
