Boy found in swimming pool last week dies

A 7-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a West Philadelphia recreation center on Thursday has died, the mayor's office said Sunday.

A 7-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a West Philadelphia recreation center on Thursday has died, the mayor's office said Sunday.

"It is with the deepest sadness that I am reporting that Jabriel O'Connor passed away, yesterday," Mayor Nutter said in a statement.

On Thursday about 1 p.m., the boy, who was with a private camp group of about 24 children, was pulled from the pool at Cobbs Creek Recreation Center, 210 S. 63d St., police said.

A lifeguard administered CPR, and Jabriel was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

There were about 30 people in the pool when the incident occurred - including four camp counselors - and there were four lifeguards on the pool deck, officials said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jabriel's parents, family, friends, and all of the young people present at the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center on Thursday," the mayor's statement said.
