4 killed in Philly on first day of 2013

THE FIRST few hours of 2013 were busy for police throughout the city, with five people shot - three fatally - and a man killed in a hit-and-run, all between midnight and 4 a.m.

Boy, 16, is city's first

homicide victim of 2013

* Carpenter Street near 56th

In the first homicide of the year, cops say, a 16-year-old boy was outside a house in West Philadelphia around 12:30 a.m. when he was shot in the chest and hand. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was pronounced dead there at 12:50 a.m., police said. No arrests were reported.

Man, 20, shot dead in Frankford

* Pratt Street near Darrah

A 20-year-old man in Frankford became the year's second homicide victim in the city just after 2:30 a.m., police said. The man was shot once in the head inside a house, according to police, and was pronounced dead there at 2:48 a.m. No arrests were reported.

Man, 50, killed in City Ave. hit-run

* City Avenue near Presidential Boulevard

A 50-year-old man died in a hit-and-run on the edge of the city in the River Park neighborhood, police said.

Cops said the man, identified as Patrick Coyle, was crossing City Avenue near his home around 2:30 a.m. when a westbound car on City Avenue plowed into him and kept going.

Coyle was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:47 a.m. Police were looking for a silver vehicle last seen getting on I-76 East. Police on Tuesday said that the crash remained under investigation, and that it was unclear whether alcohol had played a role.

One dead after triple shooting

* Venango Street near 17th

Three people were shot - one fatally - inside a house in the city's Tioga neighborhood around 3:30 a.m., police said.

A 23-year-old man who was shot in the chest was taken to Temple University Hospital and was pronounced dead there at 4:04 a.m. A second victim, a 22-year-old man shot twice in the chest and once in the foot, also was taken to Temple, where he remained in critical condition later Tuesday. A third victim, a 22-year-old man shot in the foot, was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition, cops said.

A 21-year-old woman also was hurt in that shooting when she jumped from a second-floor window to avoid gunfire, police said. She was not shot, and she was hospitalized in stable condition and was being treated for injuries from her fall.

Cops made an arrest in the shooting almost immediately, and recovered the gun they believe was used, but no additional details were released.
