Red-light cameras now rolling at Route 70 intersection

A troublesome Cherry Hill intersection on Monday became the latest South Jersey crossroads to get red-light cameras. Although the cameras have started operating at Route 70 and Springdale Road, stoplight runners will get warnings, instead of $85 fines, for the first 30 days. No points are issued with red-light camera tickets anywhere in the state, since vehicles, not drivers, are identified.

The intersection, used by about 80,000 vehicles each day, was one of three identified by Cherry Hill police as a trouble spot for accidents.

"That intersection has been a serious problem for us with people running red lights," said township spokesman Dan Keashen. "Unfortunately, in that corridor there is more than an accident a day."

Haddon Heights also has signed on for a set of cameras with American Traffic Solutions, which installed and operates most of the systems in South Jersey. The borough identified three intersections: Black Horse Pike at I-295, and the White Horse Pike at Kings Highway and at Station Avenue, according to ATS spokesman Charles Territo.

Although all three were deemed acceptable by the state, final approval is uncertain because the pilot program would need to be extended, said Capt. Sal Giambrone of Haddon Heights police.

Cameras are up and running in Stratford (Berlin and White Horse Roads) and Gloucester Township (Blackwood-Clementon Road at Little Gloucester Road and at Erial Road) in Camden County; in Deptford (Hurffville and Deptford Center Roads) and Glassboro (Delsea Drive and Dalton Drive/Heston Road) in Gloucester County; and in Brick Township (Chambers Bridge Road at Brick Road and at Bridge Road) in northern Ocean County.

This week, Edison, about 30 miles north of Trenton, reportedly will start operating cameras at three intersections.

The cameras have been a revenue generator for some towns, including a reported $3 million in one year for Newark.
