Police say they're ready to charge 2 in ballpark death

Police said yesterday that they were awaiting only the approval of the District Attorney's Office before charging at least two suspects involved in a large fight Saturday evening that left a 22-year-old man dead in a parking lot just outside Citizens Bank Park.

Police said yesterday that they were awaiting only the approval of the District Attorney's Office before charging at least two suspects involved in a large fight Saturday evening that left a 22-year-old man dead in a parking lot just outside Citizens Bank Park.

The victim, David Sale of Lansdale, was among a group of men attending a bachelor party at McFadden's pub, which is attached to the Phillies' stadium.

Police said the group got into an altercation with other patrons at the pub about 7 p.m., as the Phillies game was in late innings. According to police, McFadden's employees ousted the two groups from the bar, and someone notified police.

But the fight continued shortly after in a nearby parking lot, Police Lt. Frank Vanore said.

By the time police reached the scene, Sale was on the ground and unresponsive. He had been hit repeatedly about the head with fists and feet, Vanore said. There were no signs that any weapons were used in the attack.

"Several witnesses and potential suspects were taken into custody immediately," Vanore said. "We're waiting to see if charges are going to be approved."

Another suspect might have left the scene, Vanore said.

He declined to identify the suspects until charges were formally filed.

Messages left with McFadden's managers were not immediately returned. The Phillies said they would not comment until arrests were made.
