A Bucks County home improvement contractor was charged yesterday with critically injuring a 14-year-old boy while driving drunk March 20 in Northampton Township.

John B. Norton, 49, of Richboro, had a blood alcohol content of 0.41 - more than five times the legal definition of drunken driving - when he struck the boy, who was straddling a bicycle along Temperance Lane, authorities said. The teen is recovering from injuries that include a fractured vertebra and a collapsed lung.

Instead of calling 911, Norton called his wife, who arrived in a second vehicle, police said. Norton then fled, according to court records. He is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence and several related crimes. - Larry King
