South Jersey doctor killed in Va. plane crash

A South Jersey doctor was killed when the plane he was flying crashed in rural Virginia.

Virginia State Police said 52-year-old Gregory Voit died Wednesday after his single-engine Beechcraft crashed onto the front yard of a home in Albemarle County.

Voit, of Northfield, Atlantic County, was the only person on board the aircraft.

The plane hit several trees before landing in front of a house, police said. The house wasn't struck or damaged.

The plane had departed from Woodbine Municipal Airport in Woodbine, N.J., and was scheduled to land at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport. The crash happened just before 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are both looking into the incident.

Voit is a physician at ShoreOrtho University Associates in Somers Point. He specializes in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine and hand surgery, according to his profile on the practice's website.

He previously served as an orthopedic and hand surgeon for the 101st Airborne, Air Assault Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky., the profile says.

The surgeon "greatly enjoys a pastime of flying out of Woodbine Airport," according to the profile.
