Police: Serial bank robber nabbed

Philadelphia police say a serial bank robber suspected of hitting up several area branches this month has been apprehended.

Police said this morning that 32-year-old William Edwards was taken into custody last week at his home on the 4400 block of East Wingohocking Street.

He is charged in two Center City bank robberies and one heist in Holmesburg.

The robberies happened at the PNC Bank at 1801 Market St. on Dec. 2, the Citizens Bank at 7327 Frankford Ave. on Dec. 9 and the Susquehanna Bank at 1845 Walnut St. on Dec. 13.

Edwards robbed the three banks of a combined $4,296, according to court documents.

Police said the department received numerous tips identifying Edwards after surveillance photos from the heists were distributed to the media and other law enforcement agencies.

He was charged in federal court in Philadelphia and remains in custody pending further proceedings.
