Plaque dedicated for Philly cop killed on duty in 1941

Philadelphia police Capt. Hugh McCann was killed while directing traffic in Feltonville in 1941.

The stretch of road where McCann lost his life will now honor his memory for years to come.

The police department dedicated a plaque in McCann's honor today at Rising Sun Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.

McCann died on June 13, 1941, a few days after he was hit by a car while directing traffic as a convoy of Army vehicles drove through Philadelphia en route to Fort Dix, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

He was fatally struck by a man who said he was confused in the traffic.

McCann, 53, was a 28-year veteran of the police force. He was survived by his wife, three sons and five daughters.
