Humid day in Philly, more rain possible

Forecasters say to expect a warm, humid day in Philadelphia, with rain and thunderstorms possible.

Today's high temperature is expected to reach 86 degrees. Showers are expected to move through the region, with the potential for some strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall, the National Weather Service says.

Forecasters expect storms to pick up later this morning and continue into the evening. Chances of rain are highest between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., according to the weather service.

Downpours could result in some urban and small stream flooding, forecasters say.

Rounds of showers are expected across the mid-Atlantic and New England, from Nashville, Tenn., to Portland, Maine. The weather service has issued a flood advisory for parts of North Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and southern New York, and a flash flood warning for a small portion of that area.

"A surge in humidity, combined with a very slow-moving front and a series of disturbances moving along it, will favor episodes of downpours, thunder and lightning," according to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

AccuWeather says most places will see just occasional heavy showers, but a few areas could get hit harder and experience flash flooding.

The calls for more rain come as Philadelphia has already surpassed its wettest summer on record. Since June 1, 25.54 inches of rain have fallen at Philadelphia International Airport, the weather service says. That amount tops the previous summer rainfall record of 24.58 inches, set in 2011.

The weekend forecast, however, looks significantly drier.

The weather service says to expect mostly sunny skies on both Saturday and Sunday, with highs of 88 degrees Saturday and 87 degrees Sunday.
