Police: DUI crash injures officer in Tioga

A police officer was injured when his patrol car was struck by an allegedly drunken driver at Broad and Tioga streets in North Philadelphia.

A police officer was injured early Saturday when his car was struck by an allegedly drunken driver in the Tioga section of North Philadelphia.

The officer, assigned to a construction detail, was blocking traffic with his police vehicle at Broad and Tioga streets around 1:40 a.m., according to investigators.

A 2004 Nissan traveling south on Broad slammed into his car, causing him to suffer minor injuries, police said.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital to be evaluated for complaints of neck and back pain.

The Nissan driver, identified only as a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to the Philadelphia Police Detention Unit for processing.

He had not yet been formally charged Saturday morning.
