Man shot during attempted carjacking in Society Hill

A man was shot overnight during an attempted carjacking in Society Hill, according to police.

Police were called to 2nd and Walnut streets for a report of a shooting shortly before 2 a.m.

Capt. George Fuchs told reporters that a man leaving a nearby club was walking to his Jeep when two armed men approached. The bandits tried to get the keys to the vehicle, while the victim tried to get inside the vehicle to escape.

When the victim put up a fight, the assailants began pistol-whipping him, Fuchs said.

"He tried to break free from them," and eventually escaped, Fuchs said. "He ran half a block down Walnut and he was shot one time in the back."

The attackers fled on foot, leaving the man's Jeep at the scene. Investigators were looking for two men, both wearing hooded sweatshirts, according to police radio reports. One man was wearing sunglasses.

Such incidents are unusual in the Society Hill area. The neighborhood is near some of Philadelphia's major attractions and is filled with restaurants, bars and hotels.
