Couple killed in front of child in Kensington

A man and a woman were shot to death in front of a child in Kensington late Tuesday.

Philadelphia police said the double slaying happened on the 200 block of East Gurney Street just before 11:20 p.m.

Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters that the man was sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle and the woman was standing by the driver-side door.

A young boy was in back seat of the vehicle, but was unharmed by the gunfire.

"Anyone who was anywhere near that car was very, very lucky to survive the gunshots that were fired," Small said.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The shots appear to have been fired at close range; casings were found within feet of the victims' bodies.

Police had no information about potential suspects or a motive in the killings.

The victims' names were not released.
