Bucks deputy sheriff quits after DUI charge

A Bucks County sheriff has resigned after being arrested on charges of driving under the influence, the Bucks County District Attorney said Monday.

A Bucks County sheriff has resigned after being arrested on charges of driving under the influence, the Bucks County District Attorney said Monday.

Former Deputy Sheriff Joseph F. Rafferty III was pulled over just before 10:30 a.m. on an August morning after being seen "swerving all over the roadway" in Newtown Township.

Rafferty allegedly was unable to stand when he was pulled over, and an open half-full bottle of vodka was found inside his 2007 Chevrolet Impala, said District Attorney Matthew A. Weintraub. He told police at the time that he was taking medication for a back condition.

Rafferty was alone when he was stopped but had been driving that morning with three of his children in the car, according to the criminal complaint.

Weintraub said Monday that Rafferty has been charged with two counts of DUI.

He was a sergeant in the sheriff's department and resigned as of Oct. 3.
