An alcohol-fueled family argument at a Mount Laurel wedding Sunday escalated into a large fight with the groom allegedly assaulting a police officer, police reported.

An alcohol-fueled family argument at a Mount Laurel wedding Sunday escalated into a large fight with the groom allegedly assaulting a police officer, police reported.

About 9 p.m., police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn at 4000 Atrium Way for a large fight in progress, said Deputy Chief Stephen Riedener. At the same time, they received a medical call for a woman who had passed out, he said.

Officer Giancarlo Bruzzese arrived to find 20 to 30 people milling about outside the hotel. Within minutes, a larger group exited the hotel - fighting, Riedener said.

As Bruzzese tried to separate two combatants, he was punched. All three fell to the ground, where they were kicked by other participants, he said.

Joseph E. Mooney, 34, of Philadelphia, was arrested along with a 17-year-old male. Both are charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and related crimes. Riedener was told that Mooney was the groom.

Mooney was released after posting bail; the juvenile was also released, he said.

Bruzzese was treated at Virtua Marlton Hospital for scrapes and a concussion, Riedener said. The woman who passed out was also transported, he said.
