SEPTA: Man jumps to death in front of elevated train

A 58-year-old man died Tuesday after jumping in front of an elevated train in West Philadelphia and becoming trapped beneath one of the cars, a SEPTA official said.

A 58-year-old man died Tuesday after jumping in front of an elevated train in West Philadelphia and becoming trapped beneath one of the cars, a SEPTA official said.

A review of surveillance video showed the man jumped onto the eastbound tracks as a Market-Frankford El train pulled into the station at 56th and Market Streets shortly before noon, said SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams.

The man, whose name was not released, jumped in the presence of at least one female passenger, unrelated to him, who was on the platform, Williams said.

The man's body remained trapped beneath the train for about two hours while authorities waited for the arrival of the medical examiner, Williams said.

SEPTA suspended El service between the 52d Street and 69th Street stations and operated shuttle buses until the scene was cleared at 2 p.m.

Officials said an investigation would continue, pending a cause-of-death determination.
