Three hospitalized, 100 displaced in Montco apartment fire

Three people were hospitalized and nearly 100 have been displaced after an overnight fire at a Montgomery County apartment complex.

Three people were hospitalized and nearly 100 have been displaced after an overnight fire at a Montgomery County apartment complex.

Dispatchers said the blaze at the Washington Towers apartments, located on the 400 block of South Bethlehem Pike in Fort Washington, was reported shortly before 1 a.m.

Multiple people were trapped inside the four-story building, and some leaped to safety or had to be rescued by firefighters from balconies at the complex.

Three residents were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, dispatchers said.

The fire, which was placed under control at 2:20 a.m., has also left 90 to 100 people displaced, according to dispatchers.

Fire officials said the blaze out on the second floor of the apartment building. An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
