A 54-year-old woman was in critical condition after being stabbed Thursday by a man asking for work at a temp agency in South Philadelphia, police said.

About 9:15 a.m. at the Trinity Staffing Service at 2340 S. Broad St., the unidentified man asked about possible job openings at Lincoln Financial Field or other sports venues, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, told the man there were no openings and he reacted violently, producing a knife and stabbing the woman several times in the chest, police said.

He then grabbed the woman's pocketbook and fled, police said.

The woman was able to walk across the street to Methodist Hospital. She was transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

SEPTA transit police, alerted to the possibility the suspect fled into the Broad Street Subway, searched multiple trains along the line, said Transit Police Chief Thomas J. Nestel 3d. The suspect was not found.
