NEWTOWN State Rep. Steve Santarsiero (D., Bucks) will cochair a hearing in Newtown on Monday that will focus on eating disorders, in support of a bill that would require schools to share more information about the issue with parents and students.

The hearing, facilitated by the House Democratic Policy Committee, is scheduled from 2 to 3:45 p.m. at the Chancellor Center at 30 N. Chancellor St. The hearing will include testimony from the National Eating Disorders Association, a parent who lost her daughter to an eating disorder, and a woman who is recovering from one.

Santarsiero's bill would focus on children in grades five through 12, and the information shared would be established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Santarseiro's proposal is House Bill 1959.

"This legislation would go a long way in helping parents understand that an eating disorder can take many forms across different ages," he said in a news release. "Many parents have expressed that they missed the early warning signals and did not appreciate how serious an eating disorder can become. Our goal is to improve the access to appropriate information to parents of school-age boys and girls." - Ben Finley
