Clerk's nightmare: Gunman robs Wayne convenience store

A dinner break during a normally quiet overnight shift early Thursday turned into a terrifying experience for a convenience-store clerk in downtown Wayne when a man suddenly appeared at the counter, stuck a gun in his face and demanded money.

"Don't make me hurt you. Don't make me kill you," the fully disguised intruder said to the frightened clerk at the Sunoco/APlus convenience store at 301 E. Lancaster Ave., in Radnor Township, Delaware County.

The armed robbery, which was captured on store surveillance video, occurred at 12:40 a.m., said Lt. Andy Block of the Radnor Police, and lasted 32 seconds.

Police said they believe the robber, who was dressed in a gray "cat hat," sunglasses, and a scarf to cover his face, was a professional.

"He never touched the counter," said Block, noting that only his left hand was exposed.

The unidentified clerk was "very shaken up" but not injured and was able to call 911. Police are not disclosing the amount of money that was stolen.

The thief fled on foot but later may have driven off in a silver or light-green sedan - possibly a Toyota - toward the Blue Route. As he left the scene, he threw the clothing he wore out of the car. Police recovered the "cat hat," a pair of size 111/2 white high-top Air Jordan sneakers with orange trim, a black Enyce jacket with white stripes, and a cell phone with no SIM card.

Police believe the robber is Caucasian, about six feet tall, and was wearing stonewashed jeans.

All items were sent to the police lab for DNA analysis, Block said.

Radnor Township and Radnor police are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call Radnor Police at 610-688-0503.
