Former Luzerne Co. cop killed after firing at police in Upper Darby

A FORMER Luzerne County police officer accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend's lover was shot and killed yesterday by federal agents in Upper Darby after a daylong manhunt, authorities said.

Anthony Galla, 31, was shot inside Summit Inn motel about 5 p.m. after firing at U.S. Marshals, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. Galla's brother and girlfriend were taken into custody.

Galla was sought by police for shooting his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend in the foot in Northumberland County about 1 a.m. yesterday after an altercation at the ex's home, reports said.

Chitwood said authorities tracked Galla to the Upper Darby hotel, where they spotted a man later identified as Galla's brother. The man ran inside the hotel screaming, "Cops, cops," and officers chased him to a second-floor room, where Anthony Galla fired at them. The officers returned fire, striking Galla. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
