Police: Off-duty officer kills burglar in his home

An off-duty Warminster Township police officer shot and killed a burglar in a second-floor bedroom of the cop's home in Philadelphia's Upper Roxborough neighborhood, police said.

An off-duty Warminster Township police officer shot and killed a burglar in a second-floor bedroom of the cop's home in Philadelphia's Upper Roxborough section, police said.

A second burglar fled in the officer's family Honda minivan but was later caught by Springfield Township police, authorities said.

The officer, his wife and their four children were asleep about 3:50 a.m. when the burglars apparently broke in through a ground floor window of the home on the 8700 block of Sagamore Road in the Andorra neighborhood, police said.

Awakened by the noise, the officer confronted an intruder in a bedroom and opened fire, striking the burglar multiple times, police said.

The alleged intruder, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:12 a.m., was identified this afternoon as Edward Mehlberger, 39, of the 3100 block of Custer Street, in Kensington. police said.

The suspect arrested in in stolen minivan was identified as Tim Zgrzepski, 29, of the 2600 block of Kensington Avenue, also in Kensington.

Philadelphia homicide detectives are investigating.
