Child drowns in pool after going through gate

An 18-month-old boy drowned Saturday morning in a backyard pool at his grandmother's house, which was filled with seven people at the time, a spokesman for the Gloucester County prosecutor's office said.

The boy, Kanye Wright, apparently walked out of the house and through an already open gate in the fence around the pool in Washington Township, according to the spokesman. The boy lived with his parents in Glassboro and was visiting with his father, Waydale Wright.

The child was taken to Kennedy University Hospital in Washington Township and was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m., said the spokesman, who gave the following account:

While the boy's grandmother was taking a shower, the father was in front of the house, repairing an all-terrain vehicle he was selling. The mother, Alyssa Clark, was working and not in the house.

Two of the boy's uncles, aged 14 and 16, were told to look after the child, but one was on a computer, while the other was busy doing various things in and out of the house. Each thought the other was watching the child.

When one of them approached the father, he asked where his son was, and the uncle went back in the house and spotted Kanye though a rear picture window, floating in the pool. It's not clear what the other people in the house were doing at the time of the drowning.
