The hole found in a U.S. Airways jet after it arrived in Charlotte from Philadelphia was caused by a rifle bullet, a Charlotte TV station reports.
Quoting an unidentified source, WCNC-TV reported the bullet was found intact in the plane and probably was fired from .40-caliber rifle as the plane landed in Charlotte.
WCNC-TV says that based on the location of the hole, investigators believe the bullet came from a rifle fired into the air and hit the plane as it headed back toward the ground.
A pilot found the small hole in the fuselage of a Boeing 737 during a preflight inspection in Charlotte Monday afternoon.
The plane had arrived in Charlotte about 4 p.m. without incident on a flight from Philadelphia.
The FBI is investigating but has said nothing about what it has learned.
