4 teenagers injured in Ridley Township hit-and-run

Four teenagers were seriously injured Friday night when they were struck by a van allegedly running a red light in Ridley Township, police and friends of the victims said.

Three freshmen from Ridley High School and an eighth grader from Ridley Middle School were crossing MacDade Boulevard at Morton Avenue around 10:15 p.m. when they were hit by the van, said Matt Borchert, 14, who was with two of the victims a few minutes before the hit-and-run.

The students were hanging out with friends at nearby Ridley High School.

"They said they were all going to the Wawa," which is on Morton, south of MacDade, Borchert said. Police said they stopped the van in Chester and arrested the driver.

All four teens were taken to area hospitals. At least three medical helicopters landed on the soccer field at nearby Ridley High School to transport the victims.

One of the teens initially had stopped breathing, according to Borchert and other teenagers on the scene.

The conditions of the teenagers at the hospital were not immediately available.

The westbound side of MacDade was closed by police investigators as dozens of young people, some in tears, gathered around the commercial intersection.
